Lawyers in Bosnia and Herzegovina better equipped to represent and protect the rights of trafficking victims

Lawyers certified to represent cases before the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as representatives of bar associations from across the country, took part in a training held in Buna on 20–21 May which will help them better support and represent victims of human trafficking in criminal proceedings.

The training aimed to strengthen participants' ability to provide effective legal assistance and representation to victims of trafficking in line with international and domestic legal standards. The activity was organised by the Council of Europe in co-operation with the project “EU Support to Strengthen the Fight against Migrant Smuggling and Trafficking in Human Beings in the Western Balkans”, the Ministry of Justice of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Ministry of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Participants explored key legal and practical issues related to protecting victims of trafficking during criminal proceedings. Topics included recognising indicators of trafficking and different forms of exploitation, victims’ procedural rights, access to legal aid and compensation, and trauma-informed, victim-centred approaches.

Through case studies, group work, practical exercises and a mock trial, participants had the opportunity to apply legal standards to real-life situations and deepen their understanding of relevant international human rights standards and case law.

Victims of trafficking in human beings often face significant barriers in accessing justice and exercising their rights during criminal proceedings. Ensuring they receive effective legal support and representation is therefore a key part of strengthening protection for victims and holding perpetrators accountable. These efforts contribute to better protection of victims’ rights and a stronger response to trafficking in human beings in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The training was organised as part of the project “Strengthening anti-trafficking responses in Bosnia and Herzegovina through systemic reform, policy development and comprehensive support for victims”, funded through voluntary contributions under the Council of Europe Action Plan for Bosnia and Herzegovina 2026-2029.
