A two-day training session to enhance the competences of judges and prosecutors from Bosnia and Herzegovina on how to handle cases of sexual violence, in the context of applying the standards set out in the Istanbul Convention, was held on 26-27 June in Trebinje
The training programme adds to the broader effort to combat and prevent digital and sexual violence against women. It further contributes to a better understanding and practical application of the Istanbul Convention’s standards.
The key topic of the programme is the lack of consent, given voluntarily as a result of the person’s free will, as the central legal element of the definition of sexual violence. Other topics include the harm caused by secondary victimisation, and the creation of better systems for prosecuting sexual violence.
A strong focus is also placed on ways of supporting and protecting women who are survivors of sexual violence. The course increases legal professionals’ use of a gender-sensitive and trauma-informed approach in their work.
This event was organised as part of the project “Combating digital and sexual violence against women in Bosnia and Herzegovina II” implemented by the Council of Europe under the Action plan for Bosnia and Herzegovina 2022-2025 and funded through voluntary contributions.
