This report assesses how the principles of the Charter on Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights Education are reflected in the curriculum.
In the context of this report, education for democratic citizenship and human rights education refers to the aspects of education, at school level, intended to prepare students to become active citizens, to ensure they have the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to contribute to the development and well-being of the society in which they live. It encompasses teaching and learning in the classroom as well as practical experience gained through school life and activities in wider society.
This report consists of four chapters, focusing upon curricula in France, Finland and Ireland, that outline the different approaches to EDC/HRE and identify the five proven practices through which EDC/HRE is delivered:
- classroom instruction,
- extracurricular activities including community service and service learning,
- student participation in school governance,
- democratic processes simulations and gaming, and
- actions to combat school bullying and protect students;
In conclusion it outlines five areas where progress is required: learning methods, student participation, teacher training, assessments and school climate/protection of the vulnerable student.
