Joining the call to end pandemic of gender-related killings of and violence against women

Marceline Naudi, President of GREVIO, endorses the statement made by Dubravka Šimonović, United Nations special rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences, ahead of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Highlighting the pandemic nature of gender-related killings (femicide) and gender-based violence against women, the special rapporteur calls on states worldwide to take urgent steps to prevent such killings of women as well as all acts of gender-based violence against women, through the establishment of national multidisciplinary prevention bodies or femicide watches/observatories on violence against women. These bodies should be mandated to collect comparable and disaggregated data on gender-related killings of women and conduct an analysis of such cases to determine shortcomings, while recommending preventive measures – a call which echoes many GREVIO baseline evaluation reports issued to date.

By endorsing this statement, GREVIO adds its voice to those of the many special mandates and procedures as well as other regional women’s rights monitoring mechanisms speaking out against this extreme form of violence against women.
