Empowerment of women and girls and ending violence against them: Council of Europe to contribute to regional review of Beijing platform for action

On 29-30 October 2019, the United Nations are holding a regional review in Geneva which will feed into its global report in 2020. The Council of Europe is taking an active part in the regional review meeting. In this context, Marceline Naudi the President of the Group of Experts on Action against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (GREVIO) presented the Council of Europe’s contribution to ending violence against women, and Charles Ramsden, Chair of the Gender Equality Commission (GEC) presented the Council of Europe’s global contribution to the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action and the 2030 Agenda.

The Council Europe will also co-organise two side-events in the margins of the review meeting: one on “The Istanbul Convention in practice: Holistic care for victims of sexual violence” co-organised with the Permanent Representation of Belgium to the United Nations in Geneva, and another one on “Ending Violence against Women and Girls: Prevalence, Proposals and Partnerships” , co-organised with the International Council of Women, and co-sponsored by the French Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, the Permanent Mission of Canada to the UN in Geneva, the UN Women Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia and NGO/CSW Geneva. Marlène Schiappa, France’s State Secretary for Gender Equality, will deliver a closing statement at this side-event.
