Council of Europe's expert group on violence against women visits Cyprus

A delegation of the Council of Europe's Group of Experts on Action against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (GREVIO) will carry out an evaluation visit to Cyprus from 14 to 18 March 2022. This visit is one of the steps in the procedure to monitor the implementation by Cyprus of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (Istanbul Convention).

The Istanbul Convention is based on the understanding that states must fully address gender-based violence in all its forms and take measures to prevent such violence, protect the victims and prosecute the perpetrators.

Meetings will be held with representatives from different Ministries and public bodies, including: the Ministry of Justice and Public Order, the Ministry of Labour, Welfare and Social Insurance, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport and Youth, as well as members of the Police and the Advisory Committee for Preventing and Combating Violence in the Family, among others.

In addition, the GREVIO delegation will meet with representatives of non-governmental organisations and civil society working in the area of violence against women.

GREVIO plans to publish its evaluation report on Cyprus during 2022.
