Follow-up round table on promoting national synergies in implementing the Istanbul Convention in Serbia

On 23 November 2023, the Violence against Women Division organised a follow-up round table on the implementation of the Istanbul Convention in Serbia, aimed at promoting national synergies in addressing violence against women. The meeting provided the unique opportunity to take stock of and discuss progress, remaining challenges and ways forward in order to comply with the findings of the Group of Experts on Action against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (GREVIO) baseline evaluation report on Serbia published on 22 January 2020, as well as the recommendations of the Committee of the Parties to Serbia a adopted on 4 February 2020 and the conclusions of the Committee of the Parties adopted in June 2023.

The round table gathered state representatives and civil society actors representing all sectors active in fighting violence against women and relevant to the thematic discussions of the round table. The discussions focussed on the provision of support services to women’s victims, their effective access to justice, and coordinated policies to prevent and combat violence against women and domestic violence. The importance of the Istanbul Convention’s standards and the ned to uphold and implement these was referred to throughout the day. This was recognised to be challenging in terms of addressing all forms of violence covered by the Istanbul Convention in a geographically even way.
