On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPFA), a position paper highlights GREVIO’s contribution to its implementation alongside those of other members of the End Discrimination and Violence against Women Platform (EDVAW Platform). Adopted by all seven members of the Platform, it analyses progress and persistent challenges the world is facing in terms of gender equality.
In the face of the rollback of women's rights and persistent structural barriers, this document emphasises the urgency of strengthening the legal and political frameworks to combat violence and discrimination. It was submitted to the Commission on the Status of Women ahead of its 69th session on Beijing +30 to be held at the United Nations headquarters in New York from 11 to 22 March 2024.
Its key recommendations include the ratification and implementation of international and regional instruments on women's rights, the strengthening of human rights protection mechanisms and the strengthening of the Commission on the Status of Women to counter setbacks in equality.
At the national level, it calls for the elimination of discriminatory laws, the adoption of inclusive and adequately funded policies, and structural reforms to combat gender stereotypes and all forms of violence against women and girls.
