Council of Europe HELP course on Data Protection and Privacy Rights for Bosnia and Hercegovina Legal Professionals

On 06 October, the HELP course on Data Protection and Privacy Rights was launched for some 50 legal professionals from Bosnia and Hercegovina during an in-person event organised in Sarajevo by the HRTF supported “HELP in the Western Balkans” project.

The participants were welcomed by Arben MURTEZIC, Director of the Centre for Judicial and Prosecutorial Training of the Federation of Bosnia and Hercegovina and Jasminka PERUNICIC ALLEN, Project Coordinator, HELP in the Western Balkans, CoE. The HELP courses in Bosnia and Hercegovina are organised jointly by the institutions coming both from the Federation of BiH and Republika Srpska, and the participants are multiprofessional, judges, prosecutors, lawyers, police, etc.

Ms. PERUNICIC ALLEN introduced the participants with the HELP methodology and the main aim of the project. The certified HELP tutor and an expert in the field, Muhamed MUJAKIC, presented the HELP course on Data Protection and Privacy Rights and the additional materials from the domestic legislation which will be placed on the platform for the participants through the implementation of the course in the following weeks.

The HELP course on Data Protection and Privacy Rights offers a comprehensive curriculum which covers in an interactive way the key concepts, the legal framework of the CoE and the EU (directly applicable at national level), the case law or the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) and of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) and specific areas of data protection. One of the key reference materials to develop this course has been the Handbook on Data Protection developed jointly by the EU FRA and the CoE together with the Registry of the ECtHR. Existing case law on data protection and privacy rights covers topics such as medical sector, media (traditional and non-traditional), development of new technologies (i.e. GPS, drones, CCTV), e-communication and marketing, and workplace surveillance.
