Addressing anti-gender rhetoric
Hard-won rights concerning gender equality, particularly women’s rights are especially vulnerable to backlash, as evidenced by the impact of anti-gender rhetoric across Europe and beyond. Well-established legal protections are challenged, women's access to health services is limited, and discrimination is justified by contesting the very concept of gender as a social construct. This backlash has led to a rise in sexist hate speech, particularly online. It perpetuates violence and harassment against women and girls, notably those who defend human rights. Addressing these threats requires an intersectional approach that situates the response to anti-gender rhetoric within a broader context of defending democracy. Coordinated efforts, such as value-based communication, messaging through positive narratives, and defending established standards are needed to counter misinformation, defend the gender equality acquis, and promote an inclusive, just society.
