Workshop for Members of Ukrainian Parliament answering the question, ‘How will the Istanbul Convention help to stop violence against women and domestic violence in Ukraine?’

A workshop was held on the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (also known as the Istanbul Convention), for 50 participants including Ukrainian Members of Parliament (MPs), assistants and consultants to Ukrainian MPs.

The training was initiated by MP Maria Mezentseva, Chairperson of the Subcommittee on Approximation of Ukrainian Legislation to EU Legislation of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Ukraine's Integration into the European Union and Head of the Ukrainian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). Kateryna Levchenko, Government Commissioner on Gender Policy, Deputy Chair of the Council of Europe Commission on Gender Equality participated in the event as a guest speaker.

The participants exchanged information regarding implementation and ratification of the convention, discussed existing myths and facts about the convention and learned how the system of assistance to victims of domestic violence will work after ratification of the Istanbul Convention.

The session was organised in Ukraine by the Council of Europe project “Combating violence against women in Ukraine” (COVAW) on 24 May 2021 to further develop knowledge of the Istanbul Convention and proper understanding of its provisions, which is a valuable source of information at the decision-making level in Ukraine in the current political environment.
