What regions in the Russian Federation can do to prevent and combat violence against women and domestic violence: regional seminar in Ekaterinburg

On 18-19 February in Ekaterinburg (Russian Federation) more than 70 specialists gathered to discuss how actors at regional level can better co-operate to prevent and combat violence against women (VAW) and domestic violence (DV). These included international experts as well as members of national and regional authorities and civil society organisations of different regions of the Russian Federation (Sverdlovsk, Astrakhan, Chelyabinsk, Kurgan, Tumen, Ulyanovsk Vladimir, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Yamalo-Nenetsk Autonomous Okrug, Permskij Krai, Republic of Tatarstan and Moscow). As part of the programme, participants also visited a local shelter and a centre of social services.

Experts from Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom presented international experiences on inter-agency co-operation in the field of VAW and DV, as well as on the implementation of decisions of the European Court of Human Rights’ decisions cases on these topics. A team of international and national experts presented a summary of the “research on preventing and combating VAW and DV in the Russian Federation based on an analysis of challenges and gaps and a compilation of good practices”.

The research and the seminar are part of the project Co-operation in the implementation of the Russian Federation National Action Plan Strategy for Women 2017-2022 (2019-2020) funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe.
