On 31 October 2024 the Council of Europe held a roundtable “European Court of Human Rights and women’s rights: execution of ECtHR judgements in cases “Levchuk v.Ukraine No.17496/19 and “Ivashkiv v.Ukraine No.59670/14”, gathering together Ukrainian lawyers, judges, prosecutors, representatives of NGOs and legal professionals working with the victims of domestic violence in Kyiv.
40 participants from different regions of Ukraine joined this hybrid event to discuss the topical issues, including enforcement of judgments of the European Court of Human Rights in Ukraine, on the example of Levchuk v. Ukraine No. 17496/19 and Ivashkiv v. Ukraine No. 59670/14, challenges and legislation gaps in enforcement of ECHR judgments in Ukraine, and implementation of Istanbul Convention in a time of war. National and international experts also highlighted the role of public sector support in the exercise of women's rights when applying to national courts and enforcement of ECHR judgments at the national level, while Ukrainian NGOs shared their experience and practices.
At the event the recently published “Working with victims of sexual violence during armed conflict: A manual for Ukrainian prosecutors” was disseminated among the participants. The Manual has been developed with the focus on the provisions of the Istanbul Convention as well as other international frameworks and instruments, practical experience and best practices of international institutions.
This event was organised in the framework of the Council of Europe Project “Combating Violence against Women in Ukraine – Phase II” (COVAW-II).
