Preventing and combating domestic violence - discussions in Baku during the “16 days of activism against gender-based violence”

On 4 December 2024, the Council of Europe Office in Baku hosted a café discussion on “Domestic Violence in the Case Law of the European Court of Human Rights” as part of the “16 days of activism against gender-based violence.”

The event provided a platform for informal discussions among 34 civil society representatives, judges, legal professionals, and youth. Participants shared their ideas and experiences on promoting gender equality and raising awareness of international standards addressing domestic violence.

Latif Huseynov, Judge of the European Court of Human Rights, presented the concept of ‘domestic violence,’ offering practical examples and systemic approaches from the Court’s case law. He emphasised domestic violence as a human rights and anti-discrimination issue, elaborating on state obligations to prevent and combat violence, protect women’s physical integrity, and align with current international standards.

Participants shared personal experiences and advocated for a society with zero tolerance for violence against women.

This event was organised under the European Union and Council of Europe joint programme “Partnership for Good Governance”, co-funded by the EU and the Council of Europe as part of the project “Preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence in Azerbaijan.”
