In November and December, four training sessions aimed at enhancing the criminal justice system’s response to domestic violence were held in Chisinau. Organised by the Women's Law Center (CDF), with support from the Council of Europe Office in Chisinau, the sessions brought together a total of 104 participants representing key sectors of the justice system, including judges, prosecutors, police officers, criminal investigators, forensic doctors, probation officers, and state-funded legal aid lawyers.
Participants from Cahul, Falesti, Ștefan Voda, and Chisinau engaged in practical exercises, discussions, and presentations to foster a more coordinated approach within the justice system.
Key topics included the legislative framework for addressing domestic violence, the dynamics between victims and perpetrators, and the needs of vulnerable groups of victims. Systemic challenges were also discussed, drawing on findings from the study ”Evaluating the response of the criminal justice system to cases of domestic violence in Cahul, Falesti, Stefan Voda districts and Chisinau municipality”. Participants identified barriers to effective intervention and explored strategies for improvement. Practical exercises, including role-playing exercises, provided hands-on experience in handling sensitive cases, such as interviewing victims and collecting evidence.
The trainings concluded with a review of the study’s recommendations, focusing on strengthening cooperation across the justice system to ensure a victim-centred response.
This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to improve the criminal justice system’s response to domestic violence in Moldova, carried out within the Council of Europe project Supporting the implementation of the Istanbul Convention in the Republic of Moldova.
