Ensuring gender equality through the practice of judges, prosecutors and investigators in Armenia

On 18-19 February judges, prosecutors and investigators of Armenia participated in a two-day interactive training of trainers on ensuring gender equality in Armenia. The training was based on the training course “Ensuring gender equality through the practice of judges, prosecutors and investigators” developed by the Council of Europe for the Academy of Justice of Armenia. The participants, trainers from the Academy, will teach this course about women’s access to justice, gender stereotypes, the essence and forms of gender discrimination, to legal professionals starting in March 2022. The participants received in-depth knowledge on international and regional legal framework on ensuring gender equality, gender sensitive cases, courtroom management and psychological aspects, victim-centred approach in judicial practice, international standards and practices.

Equality is an underlying value of international law. All major human rights treaties contain a prohibition on discrimination on the basis of sex or gender, whether in the enjoyment of the rights enumerated in the document, or as a free-standing norm. Guaranteeing women’s equal access to justice is also one of the five priority themes of the Council of Europe’s Gender Equality Strategy 2018-2023”, highlighted Shazia Choudhry, international consultant and co-author of the Gender Equality Course.

The training of trainers was organised within the framework of the Council of Europe project “Path towards Armenia’s ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence” jointly with the Justice Academy of Armenia.
