Civil society uses digital platforms to raise awareness on violence against women in Serbia

Sloboda Nema Cenu, selected under  the call for projects  for civil  society organisations (CSO), has successfully completed a podcast series aimed at raising awareness of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combatting violence against women and domestic violence (Istanbul Convention) and gender-based violence in Serbia. The project, funded by the Council of Europe Ending Violence against Women: Multi-Country Programme, ran from April to December 2024, reaching over 800 000 people across various digital platforms.

The podcast series, Woman in the Bathroom, evolved from the long-standing Woman in a Box radio show. It focused on critical topics such as femicide, sexual harassment, and legal frameworks, providing a safe space for discussions with experts and activists. The series effectively explained the provisions of the Istanbul Convention, ensuring that both the general public and decision-makers were informed.

Over 12 episodes, the podcast fostered important conversations and engaged listeners in discussions on gender-based violence. It featured 15 experts in the field of women’s rights, emphasising an informative and expert-driven approach to raising awareness. The project’s impact continues, as episodes are being transformed into educational resources that will be made available on the CSO’s website, ensuring the continued promotion of awareness and education on gender-based violence in Serbia.

This awareness raising initiative  was carried out using methodology developed by the Council of Europe Gender Equality Division, Women Against Violence Europe Network (WAVE) and  UN Women.
