Armenian police chiefs committed to combating violence against women

The second group of Armenian police leadership, 14 police chiefs (14 men) from regional divisions and five officers (2 women and 3 men) from the department on protection of Juveniles' rights and combating domestic violence of the General Department of Armenian Police gathered in Tsaghkadzor on 1-2 March 2024, for a tailored training on combating violence against women and domestic violence.

The primary objective of the training was to enhance their knowledge and skills on the topic which will enable them to provide a comprehensive response and protection to victims of domestic violence. The training covered the  causes and consequences of domestic violence, dispelled misconceptions and misunderstandings about this human rights violation , and introduced the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence. Practical exercises, based on the draft amendments to the national law on domestic violence and on European Court of Human Rights cases and national legislation, helped to give a practical perspective to the police work in combating violence against women and domestic violence.

One of the regional police divisions stated that "This training is very timely considering the ongoing changes in the structure of the Armenian police and the expected modifications in national legislation related to domestic violence. This knowledge update on police responses to domestic violence cases helps us better understand and lead the work of community police officers who will join our regional divisions from July 2024. They will be responsible for handling these cases. Additionally, the training facilitated discussions on the draft amendments of national law, connecting these changes with international standards."

The training was organised in the framework of the Council of Europe project “Ending violence against women and promoting gender equality in Armenia” in partnership with the Ministry of Interior.
