On 10 September 2025, Norway notified the Council of Europe that it has accepted additional Part III undertakings under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages with regard to the North Sami language covering the areas of administrative authorities and public services, media and economic and social life.
This is a welcomed addition, especially as Norway similarly extended its undertakings in 2021 by applying Part III of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages also to the Lule Sami language and the South Sami language in respect of the territory for which the Kingdom of Norway is responsible for international relations.
The Committee of Experts of the Language Charter encourages States Parties to regularly review their level of commitment under the Charter so as to reflect improvements in the situation of their regional or minority languages.
