Europe Day – Council of Europe days

On 9 May, the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe Secretariat took part in the celebrations of the Europe Day at the European Parliament in Luxembourg.

Each year, Europe Day pays tribute to Robert Schuman's 1950 declaration and celebrates the European values of peace, unity, solidarity, democracy and freedom. This year, a rich programme of events and a wide variety of information stands offered visitors de opportunity to commemorate the European Union, and celebrate together the 20th anniversary of the biggest enlargement in European history, when 10 new countries joined the European Union in 2004.  This day was also part of the "Council of Europe Visibility Days" as part of the "Telling the Council of Europe" initiative, launched to raise awareness of the Council of Europe within its member states. This initiative highlights how the Council of Europe impacts the lives of millions of European citizens by protecting their fundamental rights, democracy, and the rule of law.

An information stand presenting the Council of Europe and its missions welcomed hundreds of visitors throughout the day. The European Institute of Cultural Routes also held an information stand presenting the 47 certified Cultural Routes and the regular activities of the Cultural Routes programme. A quiz specifically designed for the occasion encouraged visitors to explore the Cultural Routes through a variety of information material available.

The Secretariat of the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe Programme was honoured by the presence of His Royal Highness the Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg and Mr. Eric Thill, Minister for Culture and Minister Delegate for Tourism of Luxembourg, both at the Council of Europe and at the EICR stands.
