The Project to Strengthen Prevention and Combating Corruption in Kyrgyzstan organised a one-day Training on ethics standards and conflict of interest rules for a group of Supreme Court and first instance courts judges on 21-23 May in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The objective of the training was to strengthen the knowledge and awareness of the Kyrgyz judiciary about principles and rules governing judges’ professional conduct, in particular ethics, incompatible behaviour and impartiality.

The training participants acquired and improved their knowledge on international and European standards on judicial ethics and conflicts of interest. The training was particularly timely given that the new law on conflict of interest entered into force in 2017 and it represents a new series of demands towards the judiciary. The participants appreciated the knowledge shared by the international consultant on findings of reports of CoE consultative and monitoring bodies, as well as an array of Member States’ practices in the implementation of ethics standards and conflict of interest rules in the judiciary. The practical approach, through mock exercises and case studies were acknowledged as valuable by participants.
