From 21 to 23 April will take place the international e-conference “EU Values, Diversity and Intercultural Dialogue: Enhancing the debate”, organised by the Jean Monnet Project EuVadis.

Speaking on the “Democracy and European Citizenship in the EU” session on Wednesday 21st, Mr Jan Kleijssen, Director of the Council of Europe Information Society and Action against Crime, will participate to raise the question of the artificial intelligence challenges on human rights, the rule of law and democracy. He will discuss the importance of the contribution of the Council of Europe, its current work towards an appropriate regulation of AI and its impact on different sectors, and overall, the unique perspective the Council of Europe brings to the international discussion on one of the great digital challenges of the century.

Mr Patrick Penninckx, Head of Information Society Department at the Council of Europe will speak on Thursday 22nd to discuss hate speech on- and off-line. In the light of the current rise of hate speech on and off-line, finding balance between fighting the issue and the right to freedom of expression represents a challenging question. During the panel “Hate speech as the negation of EU Values'' from 12:30 to 14:00 (Athens Time), Mr Penninckx will talk about hate speech targeting not only minorities but also medias. He will, for instance, present the work of the Expert Committee on Combating Hate Speech (ADI/MSI-DIS) and the need to prevent the misuse of hate speech laws, among other issues.
