European Institutions united against antisemitism

In the course of this year’s International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) plenary which was streamed from Leipzig, European institutions announced several important initiatives. Katharina von Schnurbein, European Commission Coordinator on combating antisemitism and fostering Jewish life, announced the adoption of the Council Declaration on antisemitism. Representing the Council of Europe, I was able to the report on the likely adoption of the Recommendation on passing on remembrance of the Holocaust and preventing crimes against humanity by the Committee of Ministers in January. The adoption of the Recommendation will be significant, as it will be backed by the 47 member states of the Council of Europe. I also highlighted the adoption of an opinion by the Council of Europe’s European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) on the IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism. The ECRI opinion welcomes the IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism as a tool for education and awareness-raising. It promotes a better understanding of antisemitism. Lastly, I was able to announce the participation of Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić in the Malmö Forum organised by Sweden as part of its forthcoming chairmanship of IHRA. The initiatives show that European institutions are united in their fight against antisemitism.
