Prime minister opens higher education conference in Albania

Prime Minister Sali Berisha opened the conference on “Reform of Albanian Higher Education in the European Area”, which was held in Tirana on 22 – 23 March 2006. The conference was coorganized by the Council of Europe and the Albanian Ministry of Education, and it was the launching conference for the Albanian Master Plan for higher education. The Minister of Education, Dr. Genc Pollo, presented his vision of higher education in Albania and participated in the discussion throughout the conference.

The Albanian government has made education reform one of its top priorities. As a part of this work, it has decided to undertake a comprehensive reform of higher education and research through the elaboration of a Master Plan. Developments and trends in higher education in Europe, in particular within the Bologna Process, will be an important element in the Master Plan, and the Council of Europe will provide international expertise. Albania acceded to the Bologna Process in September 2003.

The conference provided a broad overview of developments in higher education in Europe and ample opportunities for discussion between members of the Albanian higher education community, the Minister and Deputy Minister of Education and international experts. The discussions showed considerable commitment among participants to reforming higher education in Albania as well as an understanding that this will be a time consuming and sometimes painful process.
