Minority languages: experts to visit Hungary

A delegation of the Committee of Experts of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages is to visit Hungary from 24 to 26 May 2006, as part of its monitoring activities on the country's implementation of the treaty. The visit follows the submission by Hungary of its third periodical report, where the government explains the way in which its obligations in respect of the Charter have been fulfilled.

During the visit to Budapest and Pécs, the delegation will meet representatives of the regional or minority languages covered by the Charter, including representatives of NGOs, as well as representatives of local authorities and of the national government.

On the basis of the information gathered, the Committee will prepare its evaluation report, if necessary proposing recommendations to be made by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe to the Hungarian authorities on how the Charter can be better implemented.
