European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages

Regional or minority languages: experts to visit Slovakia

A delegation of the Committee of Experts of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages is to visit Slovakia from 28 September to 1 October 2004, as part of its monitoring activities on the country's implementation of the treaty. The visit follows the submission by Slovakia of its first periodical report, where the government explains the way in which its obligations in respect of the Charter have been fulfilled.

During its visits to Kosice and Bratislava, the delegation will meet representatives of the following languages: Romany, Ruthenian, Ukrainian, German, Hungarian, Croatian, Bulgarian, Polish, Czech, Yiddish, including representatives of NGOs, as well as representatives of local authorities and of the national government. It will also meet a representative of the Jewish minority.

On the basis of the information gathered, the Committee will prepare its evaluation report, if necessary proposing recommendations to be made by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe to the Slovak authorities on how the Charter can be better implemented.
