Minority languages: experts to visit Germany
A delegation of the Committee of Experts of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages is to visit Germany from 13 to 17 September 2004, as part of its monitoring activities on the country's implementation of the treaty. The visit follows the submission by Germany of its second periodical report, where the government explains the way in which its obligations in respect of the Charter have been fulfilled.
During its visits to Frankfurt, Hamburg, Bremen and Berlin, the delegation will meet representatives of the Romany, North Frisian, Sater Frisian, Danish, Low German and Sorbian languages, including representatives of NGOs, as well as representatives of Land authorities and of the Federal Government.
On the basis of the information gathered, the Committee will prepare its second evaluation report, if necessary proposing recommendations to be made by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe to the German authorities on how the Charter can be better implemented.
The Committee of Experts adopted its first evaluation report on Germany in 2001.
