The European Charter for regional and minority languages: application by the United Kingdom examined
Strasbourg, 24.03.2004: The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe has just adopted a recommendation on the application of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages by the United Kingdom.
The recommendation follows an evaluation report prepared by the Charter's independent Committee of Experts, using information submitted periodically by the country concerned, by NGOs and from reports following on-the-spot visits by the committee.
Concerning the United Kingdom, the Committee of Ministers makes several recommendations with regard to the United Kingdom's implementation of the undertakings chosen for Scottish Gaelic, in particular in the fields of education and administration. Recommendations are also made with regard to the use of Welsh in education and in social care facilities, Irish in public television and private radio and Scots and Ulster Scots in public life.
