Stakeholder Conference on Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights held in Ankara, Turkey (11-13 November 2009)
The Minister of National Education, Ms Nimet «UBUK«U, opening the Conference
A major stakeholder conference on democratic citizenship and human rights education was held in Ankara from 11-12 November 2009 in co-operation with the Ministry of National Education and the Council of Europe. The Conference gathered some 200 participants from all sectors of education in Turkey, including the Ministry of National Education, the Board of Education, university professors, provincial authorities, teachers, students and NGO representatives.
The Minister of Education, Ms Nimet «UBUK«U, opened the Conference, expressing her full support for the introduction of democratic citizenship and human rights education in Turkey. The Head of the Board of Education, Mr Merdan TUFAN also addressed the audience as did the Acting Director of Education and Languages, Ms ”lŲf ”LAFSD”TTIR.
Over the course of two days, the participants shared their ideas on the following four themes: regulations and curricula, education materials, teacher training and democratic school governance. As reforms in this area are being currently being carried out throughout Europe, four Council of Europe experts (from Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK) exchanged their experiences with the participants.
It is expected that a project will be launched in early 2010 to continue the momentum of this stakeholder conference.
