Description
In 2010 the Republic of Cyprus celebrated 50 Years of Independence. The EHDs
were dedicated to this anniversary by presenting the cultural heritage policies undertaken by the Government as well as their historical evolution since 1960.
Moreover, heritage achievements of both the public and the private sectors were presented in means of an exhibition and a special publication. Thus, the usual practice of guided tours in monuments and sites were not organized in 2010. |

Description
At the beginning of the fifties and by the time of declaration of independence (1960), Cyprus was affected by the emergence of globalization. The newly funded State was orientated towards the west, in an attempt to define its emancipation and following the international trends. During this era architecture has also been a part of this modernization process.
While there have been examples of modern architecture in the past, it was only now that the island was ready to accept and integrate the new ideological and social phenomenon. The architecture of the new era was broadly accepted within the cities as well as in the countryside, and steadily reformed the built environment. Thus, the modern city landscape of the urban centres became the setup of the emerging lifestyle of society. This modernistic reality was an interpretation of the messages coming from abroad mainly through the means of television, journals and especially through foreign and Greek cinema.
The EHD 2009 focuses on “modern heritage” as it has been produced during the process of modernization of Cyprus after WWII. Modern architecture, as the built-up landscape-background on which the modern life-style occurred, will be depicted as a photographic memory. By focusing in the social extensions of architecture and its role as cultural denominator the atmosphere of the time will be revived.
The EHD events will include a Symposium on the theme, an exhibition of architecture and design as well as a virtual tour in buildings of the period all over Cyprus. Moreover, feature films will be projected
