26/10/2009 EDUCATING FOR PERSONAL AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY The Council of Europe participated in two sessions at the conference on “Educating for Personal and Social Responsibility: Deepening Student and Campus Commitments organized by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) in Minneapolis on 1 – 3 October. The Council of Europe ran a session on “Civic Learning in a Global Context: How Can Higher Education Make a Difference?” and also contributed to a “Democracy Forum” convened by the AAC&U, the Democracy Imperative, and Minnesota Campus Compact, which gathered more than 200 participants.
Immediately before the conference, the Council of Europe held a meeting with the US Steering Committee of the International Consortium for Higher Education, Civic Responsibility and Democracy to plan further cooperation. Among other things, we aim to organize a conference on the role of higher education in furthering social cohesion in late 2010 or in 2011, following on previous Fora on the Responsibility of Higher Education for Democratic Culture (Strasbourg 2006) and Converging Competences: Diversity, Higher Education, and Sustainable Democracy (Strasbourg 2008).
