Council of Europe and Central Election Commission discuss priorities ahead of General Elections

Head of the Council of Europe Office in Sarajevo, Bojana Urumova, together with Belgian Ambassador to BiH, Christine Detaille, met with the President of the Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Jovan Kalaba, as well as Commission members Irena Hadžiabdić and Suad Arnautović, following the announcement of the General Elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The meeting took place on 8 May 2026. It reaffirmed the Council of Europe’s continued support to the Central Election Commission as a long-standing partner institution and provided an opportunity to discuss priorities and challenges related to the organisation of the upcoming elections.

Participants also discussed the recently launched Council of Europe Action Plan for Bosnia and Herzegovina 2026–2029, within which electoral assistance and democratic governance remain important areas of support.

Views were exchanged on the current activities of the Central Election Commission and on possible areas of Council of Europe support, including through the contribution of the Kingdom of Belgium within the framework of the Action Plan for the period 2026-2029.
