On 17-18 November 2017 the Council of Europe (CoE), with involvement of international and national consultants organized a two-day seminar for Supreme Court of Georgia.

The purpose of the seminar was to support Supreme Court in its new capacity to examine compliance of the judgments of appellate courts with the case-law of the ECtHR and to give a large and comprehensive overview of the ECHR articles.

Participants of the seminar had possibility to get acquainted with the most recent case-law of the ECtHR concerning state’s obligation to respect human rights; right to respect for private and family life; right to life; prohibition of torture; prohibition of slavery and forced labour; prohibition of discrimination; right to education; right to free elections; right to liberty and security; fair trial standards; freedom of thought, conscience and religion; protection of property, freedom of expression; freedom of assembly and association.   

As a result of the seminar 8 judges (3 female/5 male) of the Supreme Court and 38 (29 female/ 9 male) staff members learned about the ECtHR’s latest decisions on aforementioned topics.  

The event was organized in the framework of the European Union – Council of Europe joint project “Application of the European Convention on Human Rights and harmonisation of national legislation and judicial practice in Georgia in line with European standards”, being implemented under the EU-CoE Partnership for Good Governance.
