Towards a more accessible and people-centred justice system: 1st meeting of the CEPEJ-GT-QUAL under its new mandate

The CEPEJ Working Group on the Quality of Justice (CEPEJ-GT-QUAL) held its 40th meeting, but the first under its new 2026–2027 mandate, in Copenhagen on 13 and 14 April 2026, at the invitation of the Danish Court Administration (Domstolsstyrelsen) and Merethe ECKHARDT, its Director of Development at the Centre for Law, Training and Communication and also a member of the CEPEJ representing Denmark.

The Working Group comprises João ARSÉNIO DE OLIVEIRA (Portugal), who was appointed Chair, and Gilles ACCOMANDO (France), Luc ALTMAN (United Kingdom), Wim DAVID (Belgium), Stergios KOFINIS (Greece) and Marta KOŻUCHOWSKA WARYWODA (Poland).

In addition to a general discussion on the implementation of the CEPEJ’s 2026–2027 programme of activities and the CEPEJ’s 2026–2029 Action Plan, the agenda included the preparation of a tool on interpretation in judicial proceedings, the revision of the methodology for court user satisfaction surveys, including the possible development of a digital tool, and the drafting of a Charter aimed at promoting user confidence and human-centred justice, in order to ensure accessible, fair and transparent judicial systems in an increasingly digitalised environment. The Working Group also discussed ongoing work on the environmental sustainability of courts, the review of existing guidelines on the role of court-appointed experts, the development of quality indicators, and future mediation tools.
