15 April, Strasbourg – The Council of Europe will organise a conference to examine how, in the “algorithmic age”, emerging digital technologies create new challenges to human rights, democracy and the rule of law, and to discuss ways to address them. Experts from academia, policy, technology and international governance will discuss how new technologies that can monitor people's feelings, behaviour and identity may harm human dignity — and why protections are needed, especially for children. The conference will also look at how AI-generated content and algorithms are changing public debate and democracy. The event takes place on the occasion of the Inaugural Meeting of the Steering Committee for New and Emerging Digital Technologies (CDNET) that also oversees the world's first AI treaty. This conference also contributes to the Council of Europe’s strategic reflection on a New Democratic Pact for Europe – rethinking how democratic systems must evolve in the algorithmic age.
