On the occasion of the European Day of Languages, an event entitled “EU Languages Day: Regional & Minority Languages – Enriching Diversity”, was organised in the European Parliament on 29 September to celebrate Europe’s rich linguistic diversity and recognise the important contribution of regional and minority languages to Europe’s shared cultural heritage. Hosted by Loránt Vincze, Member of the European Parliament and Chair of its Minority Intergroup, the event included an exhibition, developed with the contribution of the Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN). 

The exhibition was opened by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, followed by keynote addresses of Sabine Verheyen, First Vice-President of the European Parliament and Andriy Zayats, Head of the Council of Europe’s Office in Brussels, representing the organisation. Interventions highlighted the richness of regional and minority languages across Europe and demonstrated how these languages can continue to thrive and how their diversity can be preserved and promoted for future generations. In this context the added value of the Council of Europe’s Language Charter was presented, showcasing how this landmark international treaty contributes to promoting and safeguarding diversity, as a basis for peace and stability in our continent.
