International anti-corruption day: local and regional authorities must be uncompromising

Congress spokesperson on ethic and prevention of corruption, Vladimir Prebilič, made the following statement:

“Corruption is a serious crime, it takes many forms, and it can occur everywhere at all levels of governance. It can spread very widely in local communities if we, as local elected representatives, are not uncompromising enough. Corruption undermines democracy and is one of the main obstacles to the rule of law, it also jeopardizes the enjoyment of human rights by our citizens. Local self-government implies rights for local authorities, but also duties based on transparency, accountability, ethical behaviour and open government.

It is our responsibility, as local and regional elected representatives, to express a strong political commitment to prevent and fight corruption in our territories.

To help local and regional authorities in their efforts to combat this scourge, the Congress has produced a series of thematic brochures on public ethics for local and regional authorities, which propose practical measures to reduce their exposure to corruption. The adoption of the European Code of Conduct for all those involved in local and regional governance is also a political affirmation of our fight against corruption in our cities and regions”.

It is essential that we, local and regional authorities, demonstrate integrity, exemplarity and transparency every day and in every decision if we are to be worthy of the democratic trust placed in us by our citizens.”
