Developing synergies between the Congress and the Commissioner for Human Rights

During their meeting on 20 September 2021 in Strasbourg, the President of the Congress, Leendert Verbeek, and the Commissioner for Human Rights, Dunja Mijatović, discussed synergies to be developed between the two institutions. They agreed to continue their cooperation on issues of common interest such as social rights, human rights and environment, refugee protection, and the rights of the LGBTI community in particular.

The President stressed the transversality of the issue of human rights in terms of governance, as well as the need for an acute awareness of local elected officials and their administrations as actors in a robust democracy.

The Congress will continue its work to raise awareness among local and regional elected representatives in the 47 member states in order to ensure that human rights and fundamental freedoms are taken into account in the management of their communities. In this regard, President Verbeek stressed that the Congress will rely on the Commissioner's first-hand knowledge of the human rights situation in member countries, particularly at the local level.
