Gunn Marit Helgesen: 'Regional self-government is a way to enhance democracy'
'Regional self-government contributes to the principles of stability and democracy. Regionalisation should be regarded as an unifying means of giving regions a say in political decision-making at both national and European level. Regional self-government is a way to enhance democracy and to give it a firmer foothold in our countries,” stated Gunn Marit Hegelsen, President of the Chamber of Regions of the Congress in her communication to the 32nd Session on 29 March 2017 in Strasbourg, France. “The Congress’ Chamber of Regions is in a position to support regionalisation efforts by fostering the principles of subsidiarity, proximity, good governance and active citizenship', she stated stressing that the Chamber will keep on contributing to the implementation of the Congress’ priorities 2017-2020 from a regional perspective and enhancing developing the strong co-operation with the European Associations of regions to foster complementarity and synergies with other tiers of government. Two thematic debates were on the agenda of the 32nd session: 'Quality democracy at regional level” and “migratory flows at border regions”, as well as an information report on elections in the Popular Assembly of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia of the Republic of Moldova.
