Work continues to align legislation on criminal asset recovery in Bosnia and Herzegovina with international standards

A workshop was held on 8 May in Sarajevo for the working group tasked with drafting Bosnia and Herzegovina’s new law on the seizure and management of illegal assets. The initiative aims to ensure the future legal framework is aligned with relevant international standards..

The workshop placed particular emphasis on the European Union Directive 2024/1260 on asset recovery and confiscation, and the Council of Europe Convention on Laundering, Search, Seizure and Confiscation of the Proceeds from Crime and on the Financing of Terrorism (CETS 198).

Expert from the Council of Europe presented comparative legal models and shared examples of effective practices from other jurisdictions. The event gathered members of the working group designated by relevant domestic institutions, alongside observers from international organisations.

Participants reviewed expert recommendations, exchanged feedback on aligning the draft law with international standards, discussed institutional challenges in implementation, and outlined the next steps in the legislative process.

The workshop was held as part of the Council of Europe project against corruption, money laundering, and terrorism financing in Bosnia and Herzegovina, implemented under the Council of Europe’s Action Plan for Bosnia and Herzegovina 2022-2025 and funded through voluntary contributions.
