The Council of Europe and the US Department of State launched, in June 2020, the project “Action against corruption in the Republic of Moldova”. As part of the project inception, several meetings were held during 8-20 July 2020 in order to present the project, discuss precise needs of the beneficiary institutions, agree on the project workplan and calendar of implementation. The Inception phase also focused on setting up the future implementation framework, including establishing relations with key stakeholders.
The meetings organized during the inception hosted partners and justice sector stakeholders, including representatives of the Ministry of Justice, Superior Council of Magistracy, Superior Council of Prosecutors, National Integrity Authority, National Institute of Justice, technical cooperation projects as well as civil society representatives. Following the inception phase, the design of the project work plan was finalized reflecting the most urgent needs on preventing corruption in respect to judges and prosecutors and best ways to implement pending GRECO recommendation by the Republic of Moldova.
The 18-month project will assist Moldovan authorities to address pending recommendations from the fourth evaluation round of GRECO - the Council of Europe’s Group of States against Corruption. For this purpose, the Project will carry out a comprehensive set of interventions, including legislative/regulatory and strategic reviews, risk assessments and capacity building activities aimed to enhance capacities of the institutions to implement GRECO recommendations.
Considering the current restrictive measures related to COVID-19 in the Republic of Moldova all meetings were organized using an online platform which supported the timely organization of all meetings and a good interaction among CoE and project partners.
The project “Action against corruption in the Republic of Moldova” is funded by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) of the US Department of State and is implemented by the Council of Europe.
