Young women living in disadvantaged neighbourhoods are likely to be more vulnerable to risks of social exclusion, thus require additional support for the exercise of their social rights.

Gender sensitive approaches for youth policies are important to assure equal participation of young women and young men.

Public policies should be gender sensitive and support the equal participation of young women and men. Furthermore, they should encourage young parents (especially young mothers) from disadvantaged neighbourhoods to continue or return to education or training and to pursue employment (examples of such measures are appropriate benefits and childcare support services).

Public authorities should support young people as leaders in their local communities especially through gender-specific youth organisations, youth work and gender-sensitive initiatives which provide platforms to publicly raise issues of concern to them.
