Back Launch of the new study: Administration of Justice on Sexual Violence Crimes against Women in Georgia

On 8 December at 12:00, the Public Defender’s Office in Georgia with the support of the Council of Europe will present the findings of the first-ever study in Georgia on “Administration of Justice on Sexual Violence Crimes against Women in Georgia”. First ever in Georgia, the study examines the effectiveness of criminal justice response to sexual violence crimes against international human rights standards.

The event will be opened by Nino Lomjaria, the Public Defender of Georgia; Natalia Voutova, the Head of the Council of Europe Office in Georgia and Lela Akiashvili, the Advisor to the Prime Minister of Georgia on Human Rights and Gender Equality Issues.

The research analyses legislative gaps as well as barriers in investigation, prosecution and judicial proceedings of sexual violence crimes in Georgia after the ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (the Istanbul Convention) and its entry into force in 2017. It proposes recommendations for improving the legislation and the criminal policy.

The event is organised in the framework of the Council of Europe project “Promoting an Integrated Approach to End Violence against Women and Enhancing Gender Equality in Georgia” and forms part of the global campaign of 16 days of activism to end violence against women.

The Council of Europe project aims at supporting the efforts of state authorities in preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, protecting the victims and prosecuting the perpetrators of violence as well as advancing gender equality. The Council of Europe focuses on providing the latest information and knowledge about the relevant European standards, in particular-the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (hereinafter the Istanbul Convention).

Methodology

The project will focus on capacity and knowledge building on the Istanbul Convention and will ensure that an exchange of promising practices is promoted. The project will provide support for analyzing gaps in policies and practices, developing modules / materials and practical tools, such as guidebooks and awareness raising materials, as well as conducting trainings, online courses and a study visit to exchange experiences with other CoE country.

Project Objectives

Strengthening policy and institutional framework for the effective application of European standards, notably the Istanbul Convention and other gender equality standards;
Reinforcing the capacities of public officials (legal professionals, social workers, etc.) to deal with cases of violence against women and domestic violence;
Raising awareness of the general public and authorities on the prevention of violence against women and domestic violence, including gender equality.
