Support to the Department of Temporary Detention to combat the COVID-19 pandemic

On 6 May 2020, the Council of Europe donated the necessary protective equipment to the Department of Temporary Detention of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia to respond the emergency of COVID-19 crisis and to the need of providing support to the detainees and the staff of temporary detention isolators.

In total, 5 000 disposable plastic shoe covers, 3 000 medical disposable headcovers, 200 litres of disinfectant solutions and 20 pulse oximeters were delivered to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The donation builds on the efforts of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to follow the CPT statement of principles issued on 20 March 2020 for the treatment of persons deprived of their liberty in accordance with the World Health Organization guidelines. It will assist authorities in addressing COVID-19 crisis and improve the protection of human rights, as well as the living conditions of detainees.

This activity was organised within the framework of the CoE Project “Juvenile and Adult Detainees Support” (JADES) which is designed to address the issues related to the rights of detained persons and their treatment; crimes committed by/against juveniles; effective remedies against police misconduct and effective investigation of the alleged ill-treatment.

We work together to promote Human rights, Democracy and Rule of Law!
