“We Love Reading” – Integration of National Minorities

On 26 November 2015 the Council of Europe, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia and the National Youth and Children's Palace, organised and co-financed an event dedicated to the civic integration of national minority children, which was implemented in the framework of the project “We Love Reading”.

Eka Chachiashvili, Deputy Director of the National Youth and Children's Palace, Natia Jokhadze, Head of National Curricula Department of the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, Mariam Tsikvadze, Project Officer at the Council of Europe, Despine Koiava, National Minority Linguistic Group Coordinator, Ketevan Kalandadze, Head of Library at the National Youth and Children's Palace welcomed the participants.

In the opening remarks they underlined the timeliness and importance of the project. Pupils of classes 5-12 of the Armenian language schools in Shaumiani, Tsitelsopeli and Tsereteli (Marneuli district) and pupils representing the National Youth and Children's Palace Library read out poems by Georgian classics, talked about their works, presented plays and sang songs. Pupils from Public School #117 of Isan-Samgori District, Tbilisi, read out poems of Lado Asatiani, Saiatnova and Hovhannes Tumanyan.

The project participants got acquainted with the history of the National Youth and Children's Palace. After the performances, Ms Tsikvadze made a brief presentation of the Council of Europe, its history, values and also presented the Project underlining the importance of fostering civic integration and protection and promotion of minority languages by means of the Charter without detriment to the state language and the need to learn Georgian. At the end, participants were awarded certificates and presents.

The joint project of the National Curricula Department of the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia and the National Youth and Children's Palace Library - “We Love Reading” is planned to be recurrent. It aims at the enrichment of spoken and literary Georgian among the national minority children, promoting minority languages, increasing the literacy level, understanding and respect for the cultural diversity and facilitation of their integration in the society through the continued and efficient communication with the Georgian environment.
