Share experiences and gain knowledge from the Danish prison system on dealing with violent and extremist prisoners

A three-day study visit to Denmark, organised for the representatives of the Ministries of Justice of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Federation BiH and Republika Srpska as well as prison managers from the Federation of BiH and Republika Srpska, took place on 24 - 26 September 2019. During the study visit the BiH delegation visited the close state prison in Nyborg, the Danish National Center for Prevention of Extremism (NCPE), Copenhagen West Police and Copenhagen West Parole Office and the Training Center of the Prison and Probation Service (UCB Training Center).

The main goal of the visit was to share experiences and gain knowledge regarding the legal and institutional framework of Danish prison system, training of the prison staff, rehabilitation and re-socialization programmes for VEPs, as well as interagency cooperation and cooperation with the local communities and NGOs. The knowledge gained from the study visit will be used for improvement of the existing legislative and institutional capacities in order to address more effectively challenges pertaining to the issues related to treatment of the violent and extremist prisoners in BiH penitentiary system.

The study visit was organised as part of the Project: “Structured Sentence Management for Violent and Extremist Prisoners in Bosnia and Herzegovina”, funded by the voluntary contribution of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Office in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and implemented by the Council of Europe.
