Cascade training for lawyers on basic principles of freedom of expression and the application of the Defamation protection law

The topics of the two-day cascade training for the lawyers of Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina were general principles of freedom of expression in line with the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR) and the European Court for Human Rights (ECtHR) case-law, as well as the application of the Defamation protection law in the context of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Council of Europe international expert from Belgrade, Jelena Surčulija Milojević, presented both on the historical development and the modern definitions of freedom of expression, within the European standards; Article 10 of the ECHR and the ECtHR case-law, as well as the application of these principles in the Council of Europe member states. Local experts, lawyer from Doboj, Irena Puzic-Obradovic and Amir Kapetanovic, judge at the Court of BiH, discussed the principles and the application of the tri-part test in the context of limitations of freedom of expression in the domestic case-law and on the defamation and public persons.

This is one of the seminars organised for the legal professionals of Bosnia and Herzegovina, organised in cooperation with the Bar Association of Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, within the joint European Union/Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022”, and its action on “Freedom of expression and freedom of the media in Bosnia and Herzegovina (JUFREX)”
