A discussion on “The Artificial Intelligence, Media and Information Integrity in Bosnia and Herzegovina” was organised by the Council of Europe Office in Sarajevo, the Communications Regulatory Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Mediacentar Sarajevo Foundation, as part of the Days of Media Literacy. The event brought together representatives of institutions, civil society, academia and media organisations to discuss the impact of artificial intelligence on freedom of expression and media freedom, as well as on democratic processes more broadly.
In the context of the digital environment and the development of artificial intelligence, the Council of Europe’s fundamental principle is that the use of emerging technologies must be guided by a human rights-based approach, transparency, accountability, privacy protection and non-discrimination. Council of Europe standards on media and artificial intelligence, such as: the Framework Convention on AI, human rights, democracy and the rule of law; the Recommendation CM/ Rec(2026)12 on AI literacy, Recommendation CM/Rec(2026)4 on online safety and empowerment of users and content creation; as well as the Guidelines on the responsible implementation of AI in the journalism, emphasise the importance of safeguarding editorial independence, combating disinformation and hate speech, and improving citizens’ AI literacy to protect the integrity of public debate.
The event also presented the preliminary research findings of a survey on artificial intelligence literacy and information integrity in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The research, conducted on a representative sample of the population in Bosnia and Herzegovina, was supported by the Council of Europe through the project: "Strengthening Information Integrity in Bosnia and Herzegovina".
