Back Working towards improving quality of investigation of crimes committed on discriminatory grounds

A two-day training on investigation of crimes committed on discriminatory grounds was held on 6-7 May for heads of investigative units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The training aimed at discussing main challenges hindering efficient investigation of crimes committed on discriminatory grounds and the possible ways to improve existing practices.

26 participants were familiarized with international and national standards of investigation of hate crimes and crimes committed on intolerance motives, basic notions of discrimination and intolerance, different forms of discrimination, iinternational and regional instruments on investigating, prosecuting and sentencing hate crimes (UN, OSCE, ECtHR), identifying evidence of motive in hate crimes and particularities of dealing with victims and witnesses.

The event was organised as part of the Council of Europe co-operation project “Fighting Discrimination, Hate Crime and Hate Speech in Georgia”. The project is conducted with the support of the Danish Neighbourhood Programme in Georgia (DANEP) under the Council of Europe’s Action Plan for Georgia.
