Sergo Parajanov

"I am Armenian, born in Georgia and I was kept in Russian prison for Ukrainian nationalism“ – said the 20th century Georgian film director of Armenian origin, Sergo Parajanov. The film director who was accepted, loved and valued in and outside of Georgia.

For centuries Georgia was based on the idea of diversity and multiculturalism, which is best conveyed in Parajanov’s movies, with its Tbilisian, colourful yards and characters living in them.

Sergo’s filmmaking, which mostly reflect Caucasian ethnic diversity, has received dozens of international awards. His words have inspired Federico Fellini, Michelangelo Antonioni, Jean-Luc Godard, Andrzej Wajda, Marcello Mastroianni, Vladimir Vysotsky...

The Soviet totalitarian regime was afraid of such „untamed“ and uncompromising work as the work of Parajanov, because a free man is the main enemy of any regime.
